For many women, midlife is a complex time. Perimenopause and menopause are significant stages, but they’re rarely the only things happening in our lives. Hormonal changes are just one piece of the puzzle, and during this time, life often feels like a whirlwind of changes, both internal and external. As someone who has worked with women in midlife for nearly 20 years as a coach and counsellor, I thought I understood the challenges—but it wasn’t until I reached this stage myself that I truly grasped the depth of what women experience during this time. In fact, at first, I was blown away by the changes in my body and mind.
What I quickly learned is that while the hormonal shifts are a big part of it, there’s much more than just hormonal ups and downs.
We are living in a time of revolutionary change, with growing awareness and scientific research about how the body and brain transform during midlife. This knowledge, while empowering, can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when paired with life stresses that are common at this stage. It’s easy to get lost in the fog.
For me, the turning point was acknowledging the overwhelm, seeking support, and focusing on the areas of my life that I could change right away for immediate relief. This clarity allowed me to embrace the emerging scientific research and insights into midlife health—something I’m passionate about. I’ve since taken two specialized training courses in perimenopause and menopause and am currently enrolled in a six-month program for natural women’s health, as well as adding specific nutritional research to my training.

But also, “lightening” represents my commitment to lightening your load.

Menopause often comes at the most inconvenient time and for many women it creates havoc in an already full life. No matter how prepared you think you are, it can shake things up in ways you don’t expect. Although I thought I was prepared, I became increasingly aware of the impact that the hormonal (and brain) changes were having on my ability to function in a stressful job. This was really concerning as, at the time I felt that I had no option but to just 'get on with it and get through it'. When I received the right support, my experience changed beyond recognition (in a good way) and I committed to lightening the load for others in any way that I can. (And when I say others - I don't just mean women. I really think that enhancing life experience through midlife changes is for the benefit of everyone involved!)
